Understanding, Assessing and Treating Violent Individuals
The presenter will integrate findings from attachment research, neurobiology, and Separation Theory in exploring the intergenerational transmission of violence. A bio/psycho/social model of the development of violence will be presented. Video excerpts of interviews with violent men will be shown to establish the developmental patterns leading to violence, the thought process that drives violent behavior, and what treatment has been effective for them. The interviews feature a diverse group of men with histories of incarceration for violent behavior. These film clips provide a window into the mind of violent individuals. Two effective treatment approaches will also be demonstrated by videos of group therapy with violent individuals in a prison setting. These innovative treatment programs have both been empirically validated.
